Last year, Kim Kardashian indirectly coined the phrase “breaking the Internet” when she posed for a much-talked-about Paper magazine cover that explored the ways in which the reality TV star shaped social media and celebrity culture.
This year, Kardashian passed the #breaktheinternet torch to stepfather Bruce Jenner (now Caitlyn Jenner), who catapulted gender issues to the forefront of our social and cultural conversations when he announced that he was transgender. What other entertainment and celebrity-related stories dominated our headlines this year? Below, a walk down memory lane:
1. Tom Brady is the Face of an NFL Scandal
Following allegations suggesting his involvement with the temperament of the ball used during his team’s championship game against the Indianapolis Colts, an episode now referred to as Deflategate, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was suspended from the NFL. The matter eventually reached a federal court, which released the suspension given the lack of “fairness and due process” in the imposition of the penalty.
2. Giuliana Rancic Basically Introduces Us to Zendaya
“I feel like she smells like patchouli oil. Or weed,” said Giuliana Rancic about Zendaya’s dreadlocks on the red carpet during a special Oscars edition of E!’s Fashion Police. Needless to say, the Internet guards of political correctness took issue with the comment, as did Zendaya herself via Instagram, and Rancic immediately apologized. But at least everyone discovered who Zendaya was.
3. Josh Duggar’s History of Molestation Surfaces
Documents detailing the 19 Kids and Counting’s star’s history of molesting young women were made public, which forced TLC to suspend the show’s current season and pull all reruns.
4. Brian Williams Falls from Grace
One of the most recognized faces in American news history, Williams was handed a six-month suspension from NBC after it was revealed that he had lied about being shot at in a helicopter during the Iraq War.
5. Bill Cosby is Not Who We Thought He Was
Most likely one of the most shocking revelations in entertainment history, let alone in 2015, Cosby’s downfall began in 2014 and continued well into this year when over 50 women came forward accusing the actor of sexual abuse. In July 2015, the Associated Press released a report in which Cosby admitted to giving Quaaludes to women he wanted to have sex with.
6. Bobbi Kristina Brown Passes Away
Found facedown in a bathtub in her Atlanta condo in January, the daughter of late singer Whitney Houston passed away after months in hospice care.
7. Charlie Sheen is HIV Positive
In November, the actor revealed to the Today show’s Matt Lauer that he was diagnosed four years ago and has been paying people off to keep quiet about his disease since then.
8. Lamar Odom is Found Unresponsive
Former Los Angeles Laker and Khloe Kardashian’s ex-husband Lamar Odom was found unresponsive in a Nevada brothel in October. Currently on the path to recovery, Odom reportedly took his first steps since the incident last week. 9. Miley Cyrus and Nicki Minaj Battle It Out
Following a social media battle that we have yet to fully understand, Cyrus hosted the MTV Video Music Awards and, after accepting the Best Hip-Hop Video award, Minaj turned to Cyrus to say: “And now, back to this b- - - - that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press. Miley, what’s good?” Thank you, Nicki, for always keeping us on our toes.
10. Surprising Celebrity Breakups & Couplings Abound
The summer of 2015 will forever be remembered by entertainment aficionados as the summer of celebrity breakups. On that list: Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, and Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale. However, our hearts overflowed with happiness when Stefani went public with her romantic relationship with fellow The Voice coach Blake Shelton. As for wedding bells, worthy mentions include Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston, Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello, Cameron Diaz and Benji Madden, and Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. And let’s not forget that Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris also made their romance official.
11. One Direction Goes its Separate Directions
Zayn Malik broke the hearts of countless teen girls (and most likely a few older women as well) when he announced his departure from the band in March. Then, in July, Louis Tomlinson revealed he was expecting a child with a stylist he was no longer dating. And Liam Payne told us about his drinking problem in September. The band announced a two-year hiatus after that.
12. Viola Davis Becomes the First African-American Woman to Win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series

13. Kate & Will Confirm That They Have the World’s Most Incredible Genes…
…When welcoming their second child on May 2, 2015: Princess Charlotte. In other baby news: Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are pregnant and so are Anne Hathaway and Adam Shulman. Also, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian named their son Saint West.
14. David Letterman Leaves the Late Show in May
After over 20 years, David Letterman stepped down as the host of the Late Show. Listicles, “think” pieces, and endless interviews preceded the final episode, which will be forever remembered in late-night history.
15. Adele Releases Her New Album
This was possibly the year’s most exciting piece of news. All hail the Queen of Music: Adele.
